Tablets under Rs.14,000/-……

14 Sep

Yes I know it is the Tablet Era. Yes I know you want to buy one or rather want one badly. Got a really tight budget? Well Indian Manufacturers and Companies have got just the thing for you. In the past couple of months, many companies have joined the Tablet Bandwagon. Though nobody is really sure what is the purpose or use of a tablet, everyone just WANTS one. I am not going to indulge in an argument of whether people really need a tablet at this very moment. (I did indulge in it here though) This is just me telling you about the cheapest tablets around in the market right now under Rs.15000/- Rs.14000/-

I-Ball Slide

Price : Rs. 13,995/-

iBall Slide!

Before you slide down to the next tablet, sit up and take notice of this one. iBall is known for its cabinets and keyboards and mouse. i.e. Accessories. They are going in mainstream computing market now with the iBall Slide. Priced at a shade under 14 grand this thing comes with 7” Capacitive Touch WVGA Display and sporting 800×400 pixels and 8Gb internal memory, it is expensive. (Yes it is, wait till you see what you get in the tablets features below). Runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Hrithik sporting a Slide.

Though it does sport a 1Ghz Snapdraggon Processor with 512Mb RAM and has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB Ports and HDMI Out with a 4400mAh Battery. (It does not lack the juice alright). BUT lacks 3G. In today’s world where Wi-Max and LTE is doing the rounds, India is stuck with roll out of 3G in phased manner. One of the major major plus points of a tablet is everywhere connectivity of a device which provides PC-like experience. If the Tablet has no 3G, its a huge miss. They mention using 3G USB dongle. seriously!? A dongle?!? Apparently it has just a front facing 2 megapixel camera, none in the back.

SHOULD YOU CARE?

Well if this was the only tablet in this price point, it would have been great. Has Gingerbread, sports 7″ Screen and a 1Ghz Processor at heart it runs smooth alright. What does it in is the lack of 3G or GRPS and the washed out colors of the display. Also the feel of the device is pretty bulky, also has a very big bezel. So i would say NO. You should not care.

Reliance 3G Tablet

Price : Rs. 12,999/-

Reliance 3G Tab!

Yes everyone is jumping in. So Reliance surprised everyone when they rolled out a tablet of their own. Coming from Reliance you would expect a good design and build. They did not disappoint. The moment you hold the device you forget that it costs around 13k only. The design and build is pretty darn good. The 7″ capacitive screen feels good when using it, though the 800mHz Qualcomm Processor leaves you wanting. The UI thus feels laggy and slow, it will take time for you to get used to it.Though its not stock Android 2.3 Gingerbread, Reliance have a done a good job of customising it.

The Tab!

One of the biggest plus points (something which iBall missed) is that it comes with complete connectivity options. WiFi, Bluetooth and wait-for-it, 3G. Obviously you can only use Reliance 3G with it as its a  carrier-locked device. One good thing is that it allows Hot spot creation and tethering. With pinch-to-zoom and multitouch support, browsing is a breeze. WIth 8Gb internal memory and expandable Micro Sd slot of upto 32Gb, space is not a constraint in this one. ZTE (the OEM’s of this device) has managed to squeeze a good screen which retains good colours with 480×800 pixels. Though the screen resolution on this and the Slide is the same, the difference is that this feels more vibrant. Like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, this allows you to send SMS’ and make voice calls.

SHOULD YOU CARE?

With a device which feels and looks high-end with this price, its a resounding YES. Though it has its share of problems, the processor being my main concern and the laggy UI. I sorely wish that Reliance would have included a 1Ghz processor even if it would have cost a little more. Hope they bring a out a second , more upgraded version of this tablet. But for the price, its definitely worth it.

Beetel Magiq Tablet

Price : Rs. 9999/-

Beetel Magiq!

Firstly yes, its a tablet which costs only, i mean only 10k. Beetel is only known for its phones, i meant landline phones. But they have changed the game here and how! Within this tight budget they have managed tho squeeze in a 1Ghz Snapdraggon Processor and 7″ WVGA display with 800×480 pixels resolution. While the screen here again is not upto the mark as its colours seem washed out, but keeping in the mind budget this is all you are going to get. Android 2.2 Froyo pre-loaded, the custom layer is well spaced out.

Now the only real downer in this tablet is the resistive touchscreen, which means you will have to press more for the screen to detect the touch. Though resistive screens can suck real bad, this particular one on the Magiq is not so bad. After a while you get used to the touchscreen and know pretty well how much pressure it would require for the screen to detect your touches. They have even included a stylus which slides in the rear quite perfectly. With a 8Gb internal memory and memory card slot (upto 32Gb) also included, Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, GPS and USB on-board, the tablet is quite loaded. It has only one rear 2MP fixed focus camera which quite honestly is nothing to talk about.

Feel the Magiq ?

Another issue is the 2200mAh battery. It drains out pretty quickly when using 3G and Wi-Fi or while watching videos. (Btw it supports 720p videos playback). Like the Reliance 3G Tablet this can be used as a full featured phone. I sure do like the stand on the back!!

SHOULD YOU CARE!?

A 7″ tablet with 1Ghz Processor with a decent build quality and 8Gb On-board for Rs.10,000/-. Hell yes you should care. It has all the connectivity options, from 3G to Wi-Fi. It also supports Hot Spot creation. With ability to play 720p videos and even though its Froyo (Android 2.2), the custom UI layer is quite good and helps in the “resistive screen” department.

Final Verdict

Well there are many tablets out there which cost right from Rs.5000/- (some third world Chinese device) to Rs.50,000/- (you know which). It’s upto you to decide how much do you want to pay because there are options in every segment. This week i tried to capture the tablets which would cost less than 14k. Now among Reliance 3G Tablet and Beetel’s Magiq (Sorry iBall, but if its any consolation i am typing on a keyboard manufactured by you) i am still not sure which one takes the cake. There is no clear winner, with the lesser price you have to manage with a resistive screen with washed out colors. With a little higher price you have to compromise on the processor though everything else is quite great. The choice my dear reader is yours. I am sitting on the fence for this one. So which one is it going to be?

P.S: Our very own Kunal Pawar (Indian Rain) has managed to ‘score’ some points with a magazine(ironically called Score). His last week’s post has been put up on their magazine. Show some love people. Here’s the LINK. Check it out!

Yes actually a couple of new tablets have been launched in the same price range!
      1) Amazon Kindle Fire – http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0051VVOB2/ref=famstripe_kf
