Upcoming Games of 2011 ……

17 Aug

Continuing with last week’s flavour of Games, this week we will have a look at the upcoming games of 2011. Even though many good games have graced us (euphemism for bankrupted us, though you might argue it was worth it) till now in 2011, buckle up because many heavyweights are yet to come our way. Crysis 2, Dead Space 2, Dirt 3, Fight Night Champion, Portal 2 etc have all set the bar pretty high for the year. Lets see which games might and should put up a challenge to any and all…..

Fifa 2012

FIFA 2012

FIfa, one of the very first games I have played and I have stuck onto the franchise since then. Though people criticize (and often rightly so) Ea Sports’ FIfa franchise for its redundant features (and commentary too), EA still manages to get me hooked onto the game for hours on end. Its just too much fun being Frank Lampard and making the perfect run from midfield and being at the right place at the right time.

I have obviously come to love and hate the franchise over the years. But I guess like many others its love for the sport that is being translated into the love for the game. In any case I have preferred Fifa over Pro-Evolution Soccer over the years. Though PES is much more realistic in terms of gameplay as compared to FIFA, which is more arcade style. Its one of those Windows vs Mac debates. Windows got here first and I have been hooked on since. Though to give EA Sports credit, they have really pulled up their socks in the recent years. With Fifa 12 they introduce a hell lot of new features. A new Player Impact Engine means better jostling and interaction between players which result in bone crunching collisions which look great and have a significant effect on the gameplay. Precise dribbling feature allows better control, tactical defending facilitates intercepting passes more control over defence and Pro-player Intelligence helps in an overall improved AI which determines the flow of the game. Check out the Trailer and you will know what I am talking about. (Love the background score on this one)

Release Date : 30th September, 2011

Uncharted 3 : Drake’s Deception

Uncharted 3!

Nathan Drake in the third installment of the Uncharted Franchise seems to be in serious trouble. From being stuck in the middle of the desert to trying to escape a torched house, Naughty Dog (Game Studio) has pulled out all stops on this one.

Filling the shoes of the the magnificient Uncharted :Drake’s Fortune and the brilliant Uncharted 2 : Among Thieves (almost unanimously Game of the Year, 2009), Uncharted 3 : Drake’s Deception takes Nathan to the deserts of Arabia in its epic single player campaign. With the addictive Multiplayer Campaign in its kitty, Uncharted is sure to be success. A MUST BUY!!!
Release Date : 1st November, 2011

Batman : Arkham City

Batman !!

Just like Cristopher Nolan did with the movie franchise, Rocksteady Games did the same with the Batman game franchise, they succeeded. Rocksteady managed to get into the psyche of the troubled man behind the mask and in turn created Arkham Asylum which satisfied all our senses.
Arkham City is Arkham Asylum aftermath. With Arkham Asylum and Blackgate Prison in no state of holding the criminals, a private contractor is commissioned to create a patrolled city where the criminals are allowed a free hand to roam around as long as they do not try to escape. You can pretty much predict that something goes awry and our beloved caped crusader is called for. Batman has always never been just about beating up the bad guys, its the psyche and constant inner struggle which makes the character so interesting. By recreating the same feel to the game, Rocksteady has managed to even get the die-hard Batman fans on-board. Though this game lacks Muliplayer or Co-op but with over 40 hours of gameplay promised, I think I am ready for the likes of Joker, Riddler, Poison Ivy, Hugo Strange etc. We have even got Catwoman amongst the mix.
Release Date : 21st October, 2011.

Assassin’s Creed : Revelations

Ezio & Altair!

Ubisoft (the Studio behind PoP triology) has enthralled and captivated my imagination since the inception of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. With every new installment, I must say it just gets better and better. Revelations is the conclusion to Ezio Auditore’s story. The man with the cloak, skills and the seductive Italian accent is back to get the answers once and for all.

The USP of this franchise has always been the open ended approach, you can complete a task in as many ways as humanely possible. There are no fixed pathways you have to take and specific technique or strategy you have to follow. The visuals, background score and the voice acting have been the pillars of the franchise’s success. With a new city, Constantinople, as the backdrop to the game and new features and weapons such as the grappling hook, Revelations is surefire pull. The game also marks the reappearance of the first Assassin’s Creed Game Protagonist, Altair. Though the details are murky about whether he will be a playable character or not, it’s another reason you have to buy it! This game will define the future of Ezio, Altair and the Franchise itself. Watch the Trailer, its breathtaking.
Release Date : 15th November, 2011

Need for Speed : The Run

Run! RUN!

After sucking (a lot ) for the last 4 years, the franchise made a comeback of sorts with Need for Speed : Shift 2 Unleashed. For some years it seemed EA’s pin up game seriously lost its way. It wanted to balance the sim and arcade style driving with real life driving and failed miserably at both. It ended up becoming neither. It was just one confused game after another. But with Unleased, Need for Speed went back to its tried and tested ways and it did good.

Now with Blackbox at the helm of the series, the story driven angle is back. This time around you will be literally on the run across US from the cops. Its going far from the open world, run-around- the-city-you-want NFS games we’re used to. Which necessarily is not a bad thing, if the story keeps you hooked on, there is nothing better. Also with interactive cutscenes and innovative gameplay, this might be the NFS which breaks barriers. Driven by the Frostbite engine, visuals will be nothing short of stunning. Lets hope so is the storyline.
Release Date : 17th November, 2011

These are just some of the many games worth mentioning. It’s a difficult job and task to pick and leave games out of this list. I still have some of them in the kitty which should be mentioned. So there is a possibility of a Part 2 next week. Do mention of the games you would have liked to see in the list which I have missed on. (though they might be included next week, if I plan to have sequel to this post). In any case, its time you begin saving money, with the lineup of games coming out its going to be hard job resisting them. In any case Happy Gaming!!
Tushar Chhajed has started saving, so should you. With his education in fiance he might be able to chalk up a saving plan for you too. To know more about the post, saving plans E-mail him at tusharchhajed@gmail.com.

Waiting for L.A. Noire (PC) and F1 2011 (More of a technical game than a racing simulation). Planning to try Dirt 3. Any opinion on that one?

As for Fifa 12, there doesn’t really seem to be an improvement in the graphics department over Fifa 11. Well, as long as the gameplay gets better, graphics brought forward from F’11 are good enough.

L.A. Noire has really been one of the best games to come out this year. So yeah, really looking forward to that and also F1 2011. I had to choose between NFS and F1, i went for the former as i have played it more and could give an opinion about it. But since Codemasters have taken over F1, the franchise has really taken off. I think i am going to cover it next week along with some other games.

About Dirt 3. I did some research, unfortunately i got no hands-on experience so i have to rely on the gameplay videos and reviews posted online. But basically its supposed to be the best off-road racing game ever. It does good on the visuals and the car handling. Also comes with a fully loaded multiplayer campaign. If you like this sort of racing, dont think twice.
