A Room With A View

15 Aug

What a view !

The Signora had no business to do it,” said Miss Bartlett, “no
business at all. She promised us south rooms with a view close
together, instead of which here are north rooms, looking into a
courtyard, and a long way apart. Oh,Lucy!”

How important is a room with a view?

The above extract from E.M FORSTER’S book ‘A ROOM WITH A VIEW’ very aptly describes the strong urge in all of us to look out at the outside world and enjoy the scene so beautifully framed. Especially on one’s first visit to a certain place, one would prefer to book rooms specifying and willing to pay extra if need be for a room with a view. Even on my first visit to Pushkar ,Rajasthan,I very distinctly remember the breathtaking view of the lake from our room’s balcony. It was the best experience I have ever had. The serenity of the lake in the comfort of my room made me fall in love with the place instantly .

Several of the five star hotels are nowadays designed in such a way that every room have a view either of the garden or the pool or the surrounding scenery.

The Hotel Oberoi has every room facing 'The Taj'

A window not only is meant for ventilation but it is also creating an inside-outside space. Our urge to look out is inherent and it is in our nature to pass time looking out of the window. Alfred Hitchcock has portrayed this in the movie ‘The Rear Window’ where sitting at his window he solves a murder committed in his neighborhood. It may not be ethical but it sure is unavoidable. Therefore, the most important thing in a building is its view it avails to the inhabitants.

The window sizes vary framing it like a painting.

To avail of a good planning every house or room if possible should be provided with a view. There are different types of windows too depending upon the space and design of the building.

The view from the high rises of a city

A panoramic view offered by a Bay Window

The full length of French-windows usually open into the balconies(they are often mistaken for doors)

A Picture Window

A view framed by a circular opening

Usually a ‘good view’ is not provided for toilets and kitchens but this could be altered according to one’s need.
