AS ABOVE SO BELOW

THE COSMIC SPECULATION CONTINUES…..

The working of the universe and the cosmos has intrigued and inspired both architects and artists alike. Considering its vastness in subject it provides for a variety of concepts and ideas with respect to design. A recurrent theme in Charles Correa’s structures, the “central kund”  represents the void in space, which is the source of all energy. Such pockets allow for contemplation of the sky above, a place to sit and rest.

While the Nagi museum in Okayama Japan contains some of the artworks built into the structure.

SUN ROOM: ‘THE HEART’ by Shusaku Arakawa faces the south direction where the sun light is strongest suggesting it’s ferocity.

MOON ROOM: ‘THAT WHICH SUPPLEMENTS’ by Aiko Miyawaki contains diffused light which represents the softness of the moon.

EARTH ROOM: ‘A MOVEMENT OF MOVEMENT’ by Aiko Miyawaki depicts the constant regeneration of our planet, it’s continuous cycle of creation and destruction.

These installations thus render the space unique and site specific.

THE UNIVERSAL CITY OF AUROVILLE

The plan of the universal city of Auroville was also built keeping in mind the astronomical positions of the planets revolving around the sun. The Matri Mandir represents the sun located at the centre of the complex.

James Turrel, an American artist whose primary interest is light and space has created works of such ingenuity that leave the viewer enthralled. His concept of creating spaces that are devoid of a sense of depth or dimension is in conformation to outer space. He is best known for his work called the Roden Crater. As the name suggests it is a naked eye observatory in a natural crater located in Arizona.

Maya Lin is another artist who used the universe as an inspiration for her phases of the moon and ecliptic ice-skating rink.

Then of course there is Charles Jencks who has tried to spread the awareness of the significance of the cosmos through his landscape masterpiece the garden of cosmic speculation where he has tried to link the earth and the universe using various scientific and mathematical theories.

MAKING THE BOND

The movie ‘Avatar’ talks of a special bond (in case of the navi tribe they have their tails) between all organisms of the planet Pandora that links them and forms an understanding between them. However, we may not have tails to bond but we sure do have certain forms and patterns that bind us.

THE BROKEN LINK: Significance Of  The Spiral

One of the most fascinating of nature’s corresponding patterns is the SPIRAL. It appears all around us linking the microcosm to the macrocosm. It is probably the oldest and one of the most powerful symbols of human spirituality. The whorls of the spiral represent eternal life or the cycle of birth and death and the centre represents complete balance according to ancient Celtic motifs.

AN ANCIENT CELTIC MOTIF OF THE SPIRAL

Our galaxy whirls into infinite space in the shape of a spiral

water spirals downward , the hair grows spiral around our crown and the head of a sunflower is a double spiral.

The foundation of all life the D.N.A helix is deceptively organized in a double spiral so is the shell of most crustaceans.

THE SPIRAL JETTY IS AN EARTHWORK BY ROBERT SMITHSON

This earthwork is built of basalt rock, mud, earth and salt crystals on the shore of the great lake in Utah where one can personally experience the artwork by walking on it!

A belief in the interaction between man and his universe, the microcosm and macrocosm is fundamental to our lives. A vast network of relationships bind us. Events evolve out of one another as we have known from the history of the heavens, we were all born out of the same universe, the same big bang, the same primordial chaos.
